The model of obedient love

John 14:28-31 Satan has no grip on us yet we're challenge here to obey God our Father. Jesus obeyed Him even to the point of death knowing His Father had a great plan for His Kingdom. Jesus also highlighted dying brings us into the presence of God our Father. Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us You have power over death; thank You for modeling obedient love; thank You for preparing Your people and providing the Holy Spirit for the tough times. We love You Lord.  Amen

We have an advocate; the Holy Spirit

John 14:25-27 When we don't see Jesus remember we have an advocate; the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit will teach us and remind us of what we've already learned.  The Holy Spirit will provide us with a special kind of peace.  A peace that transcends even troubling times(like the death of Jesus).  So don't let your hearts be troubled and don't be afraid. Lord Jesus, we need Your Holy Spirit to guide us; especially when the world has a different agenda than Yours.  Knowing this, we ask You to fill us with Your Spirit.  A Spirit that produces the fruit of   love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  In Your mighty name we ask.  Amen

God wants obedience

John 14:19-24 As Jesus prepares His disciples for His death He tells them two important things: 1) He and His Father are one 2) If we love Him we'll obey Him; if we don't love Him we won't obey Him Lord Jesus, it seems we have a love problem in this world.  Will You reveal Yourself to the younger generation, to the leadership in the church, in our city, in our province, in our country.  Show us who You are so we can truly love You and then give us the courage to obey You.  In Your mighty name. Amen

The comforter and guide

John 14:16-18 Jesus is preparing the disciples for His death so He gives them a gift;  A comforter, a guide, an advocate and the Spirit of truth.  This Spirit lives within us! This is Jesus way of not leaving the disciples as orphans. Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit; the Spirit of truth.  Help us to be honest with You and ourselves and guide us so we can obey the next little thing You tell us to do.  In Your mighty name, Amen

Love of God means obedience

John 14:15 Loving God means obeying God. Lord Jesus, please tell us what You want us to do and give us the courage and faith to do it.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

Believe and Ask in Jesus' name

John 14:12-14 Believe in Jesus and ask in Jesus' name and you will do mighty things so God the Father will be glorified. Lord Jesus, I'm asking for a revival in Canada and I want to be used in this revival process.  Help my unbelief to disappear and change it to incredible believe in You.  Thank you for showing up in mathematical ways in creation .  You are an awesome, creator God.

Explaining difficult things; like the Trinity and life after death

John 14:4-11 Jesus is trying to explain to His disciples some difficult topics.  Death for instance.  He says they know where He is going but Thomas is confused. Then Jesus says more confusing things; He says He and the Father are one.  It's like H2O...water, steam and ice.  He says to Philip if He doesn't understand, look at His works.  Jesus and the Father are one. Lord Jesus, there are times, in our humanness, that we don't understand You yet You love us anyway.  Continue to teach us.  Show us how we can be affective in Your Kingdom.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

Life after death

John 14:1-3 Jesus is preparing His disciples for His death and He tells them that He's going to prepare a place for them.  Life is not over when we leave this earth!!! Lord Jesus, thank You for the hope we have that life is not over when we leave this world.  Please help us to live a life remembering we have all of eternity ahead of us.  Be with those who don't believe in You. Help them to discover You in real and intimate ways.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Can we handle it?

John 13:33-38 Jesus knows He's going to die so He tells His disciples they can't follow Him yet Peter wants to.  The problem is Peter isn't ready and Jesus knows it.  He knows Peter will deny Him once Jesus is arrested. Lord Jesus, You know our strengths and our weaknesses.  Please mold them into something valuable for Your Kingdom.  In Your mighty name. Amen.

They'll know we are Christians by our love

John 13:35 They will know we are Christians by our love.   It is interesting that Jesus is saying this when one of their group is about to betray Him.  Loving each other is not easy. Father, please break in on the isolation spirit in our churches and help us to love each other.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

A new commandment; love each other

John 13:34 Jesus knows one of His disciples is going to betray Him yet in these moments He says "love each other".   Lord Jesus, would You help us to love each other well.  You know what each of us needs.  Would you show us how to love each other?  Thanks for caring for each of us individually.  You are an amazing God.

The tough path to glorification

John 13:31-33 Jesus knew what Judas was up to yet He chose to look past His crucifixion to His glorification!  It's like giving birth; all the pain disappears when the baby is born. Jesus also knew His disciples couldn't follow Him in His death.  That's the hard part of death; we're left behind Lord Jesus, help us see past the tough stuff to the rewards of the outcome.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Jesus predicts the fulfilling of prophecy

John 13:18-30 Jesus knew His scripture; the Torah and quoted from it. (See Psalm 41:9-10)   Yea, mine own familiar  a friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his  b heel against me . but He must of also known  But thou, O Lord, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. So when Jesus spoke He wasn't worried about Himself but He was preparing the disciples to experience the horrific experience of His crucifixion.  Life isn't always easy but God prepares us to walk through the challenges. Lord Jesus, I think of folks who are going through or who are about to go through challenges.  Would You be with them and give them what they need for Your Kingdom to come and Your will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

Conditional blessing

John 13:17   If you know it; act on it and be blessed!  What is it? Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.     I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.   Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.   This is not about personal hygiene.  It's about being a servant leader.  It's  about helping those that we lead out. Lord Jesus, You are an awesome, compassionate, servant leader.  Thank You.  Help us to belike You.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Hierarchy!

John 13:16 Jesus had a servant heart and He challenged His disciples to have one too by emphasizing they were not greater than He was.   " no servant is greater than his master,  nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him." Lord Jesus, help us to be servants; recognizing Your servant heart.  In Your mighty name. Amen

When satan comes; serve each other

John 13:2-15   Jesus knew satan was up to something, using Judas; so He got up and modelled serving each other. Lord Jesus, please help us to serve each other.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Jesus loves His disciples

John 13:1 It seems Jesus is challenged with His love for His Father and His disciples.  He knows it's His time to leave the earth; it's God's timing yet He knows the effect it will have on His disciples. Lord Jesus, we know that You love us and we know God's will is best so please help us to accept Your will in our lives, even when it comes with challenges.  We know that unless You build the house we labour in vain so Lord, we ask that You build our church; in Your mighty name. Amen

Be careful to do what Jesus says

John 12:47-55 The trinity is tricky to understand but Jesus is representing God the Father.  He is repeating what God the Father told Him to say so we will be judged based on whether we acted on His words or not.  The judgement will come from God the Father.  What makes this interesting is God the Father is the God of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faith so it stands to reason that we all must listen to Jesus. Lord Jesus, help us to listen to You.  Help us to understand what You are telling us to do and give us the courage to obey You.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

Jesus is light for a dark world

John 12:46 Jesus reveal truth as a light for this dark world.  Sometimes this is scary because He shows us our sin but He also comes as a person of compassion who, with the help of the Holy Spirit, helps us to clean our lives up. Lord Jesus, thank You for being light for us.  Show us Your truth and help us to live a life that pleases You.  In Your mighty name.  Amen

Jesus shows us God

John 12:44-45 The Trinity is like H2O; water, steam and ice; 3 in one.  Jesus is telling us here if we see Jesus we see God the Father O Father, thank You for giving us Jesus so You can relate to us a humans, and so we can get some understanding of who You are.  You are a mighty God yet You choose to have a relationship with us.  Thank You!  May we make You proud.

Unbelief and the fear of people

John 12:34-43 Folks didn't get it.  Jesus the Messiah is meant to live forever; how could He die?  Yet, some did believe but they kept it to themselves because they didn't want to be kicked out of the temple. Lord Jesus, we need You.  Even in our churches today we have some who believe and some who just attend.  Lord, please help us all to enjoy a personal relationship with You; with it's challenges and it's blessings.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Jesus knows He is going to be crucified

John 12:27-33 Jesus, who had done everything right, knows He is going to be crucified!  Jesus asks His Father to glorify His name and God responds back in the sound of thunder "I have glorified it and I will glorify it again"  Jesus tells the crowds that they had heard the voice of God for their sake not His.  It's an intense moment; Jesus is after satan!  His death has drawn more people to Him than His life.   Lord Jesus, be glorified through out our churches, our cities, our provinces and states, and our countries.  Please do not let satan deceive us and help us to live for You each day of our lives.  In Your mighty name. Amen

Jesus is known outside of Israel!

John 12:20-26 Some Greeks come to see Jesus and Jesus' response to this is interesting.  He talks to His disciples preparing them for His death...but it's true a seed has to be buried before it grows and bears fruit.  Sometimes our ideas have to be surrendered for God's work to flourish. Lord, when everything is going right help us to remember the principle of the seed  Help us to remember Your plans are greater than our plans, even when they come with tough stuff like Your death.

A victorious entry!

Image
John 12:12-19 Folks had seen Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead.  The news about His super power was out and so were the crowds as He entered Jerusalem.  Who would have known how public opinion would change a few days later. Lord Jesus, help us to stay committed to You.  It is easy when everyone is singing Your praise but when the tide turns it's tough.  Please dwell in us so that we may continue to sing Your praises.  In Your amazing name.
